Need for Recognition
Why there is such
urgent need of recognition in INDIA?
To begin with, I would like to
post a case. We have seen most of the time, say if you want to make a team for
any event and everybody know that there will be least recognition, you will
have very less representation. But once they know that there will be enough
recognition, you have to stop people flooding into your team. This is a very
general case and can be seen every now and then.
So is the case in business
organization. In today’s time, every employee needs recognition.
Acc to Wikipedia, s a means to
increase productivity, communication, and satisfaction in the workplace,
recognition is a tool used by many successful organizations to address these
challenges. Recognition can be used in multiple models, including
manager-to-employee, employee-to-manager, and peer-to-peer. In terms of
employment, individuals within an organization can acknowledge each other for
great attitudes, individual efforts and team contributions that help build a
great culture and positive work environment.
Recognition in the workplace can
be a monetizing activity, a complimentary activity, or both. In terms of monetized
activities, organizations will recognize employees with additional compensation
(bonuses) or items that have a monetary value (tickets, trips, etc.)
But this is not the case for
discussion here. I want to focus upon the rivalry which arises due to that NEED
of recognition. Once this type of initiative starts in any organization,
everybody behave like a perfect gentleman. Also, some people appears from
nowhere whereas those who work throughout the year are asked to give chance to
someone else.
Now the question arises that
should recognition be done on a particular performance or the performance
throughout the year. It may be criticized by the statement that performance
appraisal is also there for such performance but I strongly oppose the
situation where such recognition is provided to those who work only for
recognition.
And this is all HR department
work. They have to look after such people in the organization and restrict them
so that they perform throughout the year and not only for some specific events.
