Work-Life Balance
We have often seen older ones
saying that we should work for 24 hours but today I want to discuss here about
work-life balance. How we should balance our work and life? Life here means
spending time with our family and also in activities like spirituality etc.
According to Wikipedia, Work–life
balance is a concept including proper prioritizing between "work"
(career and ambition) and "lifestyle" (health, pleasure, leisure,
family and spiritual development/meditation). Now this has to be understood
clearly. It has been seen in recent years that employees are giving less
importance to their social life including to their family to work hard and long
in their offices. We may also say that competition in the business world is
forcing them to do so.
So, one may say what is the harm
in that? But t has to be taken into consideration that difficulty in balancing
work-life is creating a lot of stress in employees resulting into many mental,
physical and social problems and it is growing day by day. Those who are not
able to maintain equilibrium between both are reporting higher numbers of
problems in solving their day to day problems too.
About stress, Wikipedia says Persistent
stress can result in cardiovascular disease, sexual health problems, a weaker
immune system and frequent headaches, stiff muscles, or backache. It can also
result in poor coping skills, irritability, jumpiness, insecurity, exhaustion,
and difficulty concentrating. Stress may also perpetuate or lead to binge
eating, smoking, and alcohol consumption.
Now if all these problems pertain
in any employee, his both personal and professional life will be affected
surely. It is reported that most of the employees feel satisfied with PAID-LEAVE
amongst all other perks and incentives which means that work-life balance is surely
missing somewhere and thus affecting employee.
So remedies for setting this
imbalance right… First and foremost OPEN
UP..!!! My real remedy to all HR problems. After that, six main components
for work-life balance those are needed to be monitored are:-
Self Management, Time Management,
Stress Management, Change Management, Technology Management and Leisure Management.
All these components can be
discussed separately later on this blog only. Tomorrow we will discuss about
GENDER factor of work-life balance.
